Introduction to Mogao Caves

The Mogao Caves, commonly known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes, are located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor in Dunhuang. They were initially constructed during the reign of Emperor Fu Jian of the Former Qin, and were expanded in the Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, Western Xia, and Yuan dynasties, forming a vast scale.

Artistic Value of Mogao Caves

The Mogao Caves encompass 735 grottoes, 45,000 square meters of murals, and 2,415 clay sculptures, making them the largest and most richly endowed site of Buddhist art in the world. They are renowned for their exquisite murals and sculptures.
