Introduction to Suzhou Gardens
Suzhou Gardens are a World Cultural Heritage site, one of China's top ten scenic spots, known as the "City of Gardens". They are celebrated with the praise "Jiangnan gardens are the best under heaven, and Suzhou gardens are the best in Jiangnan", and are described as "re-creating the universe within a foot". Suzhou gardens originated during the Spring and Autumn period when the state of Wu established its capital in Gusu, took shape during the Five Dynasties, matured in the Song dynasty, and flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Characteristics of Suzhou Gardens
Suzhou's classical gardens are a harmonious blend of residence and garden, offering beauty to be admired, space to be explored, and a place to live. This architectural form emerged in densely populated cities lacking natural scenery, reflecting humans' attachment to nature, their pursuit of harmony with nature, and their desire to beautify and perfect their living environment. The gardens excel in their compactness, freedom, delicacy, elegance, and artistic expression, skillfully organizing limited space into a variety of landscapes, thus re-creating the beauty of nature in a small area.
